Carla Michelotti has a distinguished record of business leadership, providing brands and the industry with strategic marketing insights, and global marketing expertise. After a successful career, Carla retired from the position of Executive Vice President, Chief Legal, Government & Corporate Affairs Officer of Leo Burnett Worldwide, one of the largest global agency ad networks with multinational clients in more than 80 countries. Carla has worked directly with many of the world's most valuable brands including McDonald's, Procter & Gamble, Diageo, Hallmark, Pillsbury, Philip Morris, Altria, Kellogg, Samsung and Coca-Cola. Carla has been often asked to speak to industry about advertising regulation, privacy, and evolving global issues impacting marketing.
As a “C” Suite executive she helped multinational corporations anticipate and mitigate significant challenges, and navigate successfully through every nature of domestic and international issue impacting brands and business, including “bet the company” litigation, government investigations, management restructuring, merger and acquisitions, and thousands of negotiations and contracts.
She is a recognized industry strategist on all aspects of legal issues pertaining to marketing, branding, and advertising including self-regulation, digital issues, intellectual property, and privacy; and has had an exceptional role in developing advocacy strategies and policies for the global advertising industry regarding commercial free speech; privacy; food and beverage advertising; intellectual property; digital issues; and advertising regulation. At the birth of the Internet, Carla was first within the industry to identify the need to meet with the White House as well as key EU leadership to discuss Internet marketing legal issues, and she led those first key meetings. She also organized the first “global summits” of advertising self-regulators and industry leadership to address anticipated “cross-border” advertising international issues. Most recently, Carla has advocated on behalf of the advertising industry for the protection of intellectual property, establishing privacy self-regulation, and protecting brand integrity.
Carla has received numerous awards and honors including: Induction into the Advertising Hall of Fame; Anti-Defamation League’s Women of Achievement Award; American Advertising Federation (AAF) Barton A. Cummings Gold Medal; European Advertising Standards Alliance Best Practice Award; Chicago Advertising Federation Lifetime Achievement Silver Medal Award; International Advertising Association (IAA) Medal of Achievement; IAA “Champion” Award, Chicago Catholic Lawyer of the Year Award; Justinian Bar Association Award of Excellence; DePaul Outstanding Service to the Profession Award; Girl Scout’s Tribute to Achievement Award; was named “Chicago Ad Woman of the Year” and was listed in the “Today’s Chicago Woman Hall of Fame”.
Ms. Michelotti is a Trustee of DePaul University; Vice-Chairman of the Marketing Committee of the U.S. Council for International Business; a Vice President of the International Advertising Association; and is a past Chairman of American Advertising Federation (AAF). She currently sits on the Boards the Better Business Bureau National Programs (USA advertising self-regulation); the International Council for Advertising Self-Regulation (ICAS); the International Advertising Association (IAA); the AAF; Athena International; Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana; Junior Achievement of Chicago and The House of the Good Shepherd. Carla is an American Bar Fellow and a founding member of the Illinois Bar Fellows. She is an active member and past board member of The Economic Club of Chicago; The Chicago Network; Illinois Bar Foundation; and Illinois Equal Rights Foundation. She is a member of the American, Illinois, Chicago, and Justinian Bar Associations.
Prior to Leo Burnett, Carla was an attorney with Jewel Companies, Inc. She has a B.A. in
political science, a Juris Doctor, and an Honorary Doctorate degree from DePaul University.
